Android developers, are you using Android Studio or IntelliJ Idea Ultimate with the Android plugin? Have you tried? If you have an Ultimate subscription, it should be superior to Android Studio as it has all it's features, plus all the Ultimate features. But I'm wondering what is people's experience in practice.

I use IntelliJ with the Android plugin, and my main problem is that the plugin keeps trying to do things when I don't want it to. I think there's probably a benefit to having two separate installations, just so you can work on non-Android projects without the plugin getting in the way. It tends to mess up all my tool panels and IDE layout and run configurations and things as soon as it sees me doing something it thinks looks Android-y 😞.

I use IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, because it has more features (like Database browser, profiler, etc.) and Android Studio is always one or more versions behind.

My experience aligns with Sam. I've had a weird experience in Ultimate with the plugin, so I just use AS.

i remember years ago having building issues with AS. tried IDEA and never had any issues after that. not sure how it works now as my main ide is IDEA ultimate

Also, wasn’t there an issue that you were not able to use the latest AGP with the IntelliJ plugin right after the release but need to wait until the IntelliJ plugin was updated which takes quite some time? 🤔

I think they've been closing the gap there and releasing support faster

@Chrimaeon Late answer but YESS, it's still the case. it's literally the only reason why the Android plugin is rated at about 1 or 2 stars in the marketplace, every review is complaining about it.
