Kotlin Multiplatform Development Roadmap for 2025 As Kotlin Multiplatform is now firmly established, development teams across the globe – including major companies like Shopify, Forbes, and Haier – can harness its power in production environments. During Google I/O 2024 in May, Google announced their official support for Kotlin Multiplatform for sharing business logic across Android and iOS. This and other remarkable […]

Whoah. A standalone KMP IDE. Bold move

Really happy to see Previews, Stability and Feature Parity each be a focus! ...a dedicated KMP IDE sounds dreamy, but I don't think I'm going to be the only customer seeing that plan and being rather worried: Is adding another IDE for JB Devs to build & maintain, really enabling them to deliver on these promises? Wasn't Fleet intended to be '_the_ Multiplatform IDE', when it's done? It looks like you're spreading even thinner, when resources are already well stretched across many good, but slow moving projects (3 years of CMP and still no Multiplatform Previews, anyone?). Will Google be 'on board' with this new Multiplatform IDE, supporting Android components from their side? That would really be something. Otherwise it's a rational fear that this will become yet another IDE to switch between. Hopefully my fears are unfounded; the resourcing plan is all worked out and 2025 will be KMP's biggest year yet. K ❤️ Edit: If perhaps JB are being coy with their wording and this '_new Multiplatform IDE_' is Fleets 'final form', then everything makes a lot more sense 🙂

I think having a dedicated IDE specifically for multiplatform development is a bit debatable. Personally, I’d prefer to see an official Language Server Protocol (LSP) that lets people use whichever development environments or text editors they like best. But that’s just my opinion!

@darkmoon_uk they updated the phrase:
a standalone KMP IDE. This IDE, based on JetBrains Fleet, will be tailored specifically for Kotlin Multiplatform development
Now it mentions "based on Fleet". Not just "Fleet".
