I switched to Amper 0.5.0 but am getting the warning:

We recommend using a newer Android Gradle plugin to use compileSdk = 35

This Android Gradle plugin (8.2.0) was tested up to compileSdk = 34.

I thought the news article said AGP should be 8.5.0?

Are you using Gradle-based Amper? In this case, it's still 8.2.0 AFAIK.

The mention of 8.5.0 in the article is about the AGP that we use behind the scenes in standalone Amper to delegate specific parts of the Android build (e.g. dex) to a synthetic Gradle project.
