Can anyone resolve a long-standing confusion of mine in Android Studio...

When running Unit Tests from a Gradle task, my impression is that AS behaves inconsistently: sometimes properly interpreting the test output as a test run, and in other scenarios just showing it as a raw console run. There must be a pattern, is it down to dependency versions?
