You can probably try different placements and see which one works for you as a permanent

I mean the icon disappears on me when a build is not running.

It's apparently deliberate, but annoying.

You can actually drag-and-drop the icon to the desired location

If you drag it closer to the top or the bottom of the IDE window, it should be less likely to disappear
