I feel that goes too far for #C0BJ0GTE2. The cheat sheet is behind a signup, where you must agree in email communication.
m
We spent a lot of time preparing this cheat sheet. I am pretty sure it will go around community anyways.

I can see how your paid Coroutines Mastery course fits into the feed and recognize its audience. Your blog articles, which are excerpts from your books, are valuable as well. However, this goes too far. Make it free, if it's a "free gift". Or say: "Hey, you get it in exchange for mail ads". But this way is bad faith.
m
I can ask @Halina to make some reasonable change and ping you, but I feel that it does not diserve a critique to ask for an email for a content that is very hard to prepare. I honestly would feel much worse sharing an article behing paywall (like Medium paywall), what quite often happens, and I never do.
I would love to hear some opinion from some higher authority here. I will accept it, and I hope it will end this and future discussions with @Stefan Oltmann
s
I don't like this "hey, it's free" and then it turns out you want data for that. That's bad faith and not the first time Halina acted like that here. We had a discussion before.

And yes, sharing articles behind a Medium paywall is also uncool - and will be flagged as such.
l
+1 mainly because this isn't the first time a situation like this happens specifically with @Halina

@marcinmoskala Thanks for updating the post. In exchange I'll remove my flags from it. But please have a serious word with Halina about how she handles the promotion.
I wish it had this transparent wording from the beginning.
m
I am still waiting for you to remove comment with direct link to the resource. We haven't agreed to share it
s
The poster says "Free download". I guess you have to change the link.
m
Download is free for subscribers
s
The poster should say that.
m
What poster BDW?
s
The big poster you just deleted.
m
I can see Halina deleted it, but come on, it said it is free for those who registered
s
It didn't say that.
We can agree on deleting everything and start this over in a clean and honest way. What you think?

I need to go, please remove your comments as they are an act of piracy. @Halina Will take care of posting it again without saying that this pdf that we give for free to those who register to our mailing is free.
s
That's not piracy. You host that file. If I re-upload it, this would be another case.
l
An act of piracy is way too far

Just my 2 cents: I don't know if sharing a public link to your website is "piracy". IANAL, but that doesn't clear that bar for me. I'm glad that the wording of the post was changed. I also don't see a problem with posting such a link when it's public like that. If it was a reupload, maybe I'd view it differently.

@marcinmoskala While I firmly believe this is not piracy, I don’t want to upset you. I hope my message came across clearly. Could you please have a word with Halina so that incidents like this are avoided in the future? As a gesture of goodwill, I’ve removed the link as you requested. Wishing you all the best. And thank you for providing this kind of content. It's appreciated. Just the marketing strategy needs some fine-tuning.

On another note… I believe forcing people to opt in to mails is not allowed in the EU unless they are directly service related

ChatGPT has to say this: Pre-ticked checkboxes or automatic subscriptions are not valid consent. I think the page complies with the rules: people have to explicitly opt in. The fact that the text is tiny is a separate issue.
A fair and transparent approach would be a clear message such as: "Subscribe to our newsletter and receive this ebook for free." It seems, however, that they’ve chosen not to present it this openly.
Haha, amazing. They reworked the site layout. See how tiny the text for agreeing to mail communication is now. I guess I've nothing more to add.
