Sat down today and designed my first resume in Figma. Recruiters, I’d appreciate your feedback on how it looks and what I could change, add, or remove. 🙂

What is a software ranger?

Thank you for that question. The startup I’m working for calls itself „Software Rangers“ in the sense of rangers herding software (instead of cows), so this is what is written into my contract. Actually I’m a Kotlin dev, so I named both. But I see that this is confusing. I remove that title. 🙂

It's a cool title 😎 , but I could imagine it confusing someone who was expecting Aragorn from LOTR 😂 The links to open source projects are a nice touch too, I think. One thing is that I tried copy/pasting the text into a Google Doc and it came out a bit helter-skelter. I guess this could mean that it would be difficult to parse for an ATS that worked that way? The one I had experience with was called "Lever" and it did try and parse PDF CVs to various degrees of success. I never used this as a reason to discard a candidate but I imagine there would be people who did.

Oh, I hadn’t considered ATS at all. Thanks for mentioning it.

ATS is a big big big thing to consider, unfortunately. It feels awful, but honestly, the better a resume looks, the worse it performs in getting callbacks (in my experience, and in tech specifically; obviously things like design roles are different). I used to have a nice looking, but still simple resume, and barely got any traction. A friend convinced me to try the boring "one column, black-and-white, serif font, no extraneous details" version that we're all familiar with and looks awful, and my response rate went up quite a bit. I hate what recruiter AI tooling has done to the job search process 😞

Thanks for sharing. So my next challenge is to make a nice but parseable design. Now that I know what to look for I found this template: https://www.figma.com/de-de/community/file/1077429009793641621/cv-resume-ats-friendly If it’s really ATS there must be some tricks how to do it.
