What does it really mean that Jewel isn't officially supported for plugin development? I.e. what will happen when/if it receives such official support? I'm guessing this is about binary compatibility and such?

It's mostly about the fact that there is no official support channel, tooling, or documentation yet. JetBrains is working on it, but it's not coming soon. Essentially, it should work (as we use it in bundled plugins both at Google and JetBrains), but YMMV and if it breaks for your specific use case there are no guarantees yet — although of course we'd try to help, we can make no promises.
