There is a small issue with vite plugin and vite cache directory. By default the cache directory should be node_modules/.vite inside a project dir (see: https://vite.dev/config/shared-options#cachedir). But in my case it's $HOME/node_modules/.vite, probably because we are running vite in the kotlin directory, without any package.json file.
