What are people's thoughts on this? "Apple giving up on SwiftUI"
I have never been a SwiftUI expert but I did always have a feeling Apple tried perhaps too hard to make a clean, opinionated, "nice" framework, bit off more than it could chew, and now it's got deep-rooted problems.

In comparison to Compose SwiftUI was always lacking basic things and I never felt that this is one of Apple‘s priorities. So it makes sense to me if they finally cut if off. They half-assed it anyway.

One thing I always wondered about is how they developed their old view system further while telling us they want to switch. Never made sense.
In comparison: Google made a clear cut.

Google still needs to keep Views stuff around for a while, for backwards compatibility; But they are working on it!
Widgets used to have RemoteViews, that’s now being worked on with RemoteCompose. 👌

Okay, I don't have that much insight, but I feel that they mainly develop for Compose.
Regarding Apple watching some WWDC I mainly had the feeling that they continue working on the old system and SwiftUI is some pet project.
