This is theoretically a better channel for asking about Proguard vs R8 for Compose Desktop. I feel like this comes up every couple of years, but there's never an authoritative answer.

IIRC there was just complete radio silence anytime it came up. It feels like one of those things that warrant at least a small discussion before putting too much work into it 🤷

R8 just straight up has much more advanced support for optimizing kotlin I think? The android-centric branding is indeed annoying but it's far from android-specific
