I am trying to organize a small meetup for a new Detroit KUG, but I am struggling to find a venue that will get back to me. Does anyone have any tips on selecting a cheap/free venue?

I would recommend bars/pubs that go for karaoke. They have screens and microphones which would help with AV setup for your speakers.

The rest, depends how cheap they're willing to go, if you organize your meetings in Mondays or any other day it would be an empty nignt for them, I think just having people come and getting drinks should be enough.
