The first meetup for the Detroit KUG was a bust. Unfortunately no one showed up. My wife took pity on me and brought my kids to say hi.

One person who initially showed interest asked me what the agenda was. I had thought of a casual meetup with no agenda, but maybe for next month's meetup I should play a video from KotlinConf.

We had the same six months ago… Only one person showed up to our quiz co-organized by the GDG (+ the three organizers). We have many people registered for tonight though, it can change a lot between one event and the next

The first meetups are the most difficult :melting_face: The first three I did last year had 3 + 0 + 1 attendees.

May I ask how did you promote the event? That was the issue I had originally and improving it made a huge difference.

We at Kobudei used <http://meetup.com|meetup.com>, <http://luma.com|luma.com>, <http://kobudei.org|kobudei.org> and shared messages between friends. One big plus was that the company me and my co-founder work for accepted to host us and did some promotion on LinkedIn and social media for it.

I did these which made a big change:

• *Meta Ads*: not ideal to spend money on a free event but make the starting phase easier. My employer originally did it for one of the events and it had a huge impact so I kept doing it for a few more events with a budget of 50 EUR. This reaches many people who won't actively look for events.
• LinkedIn DM: I invited many people directly on LinkedIn based on their profile. Most people didn't respond, but the ones who did were more reliable and consistent attendees.
• If you use Luma you can submit the event to be featured in the city which usually brings a few RSVPs.
• Posting in <#CAJLQSV9A> and more location specific channels surprisingly brought more people than I was expecting. Many people who care about Kotlin enough to go to a meetup about it are already here.
