Sup guys, I’m thinking about the possibility of working abroad. I’m going for a bachelors degree in economy soon, but I work and intend to keep working with software development. I see many companies ask for a degree in CS related fields specifically. I wonder how flexible companies tend to be about that when hiring new people, specially people already on a senior position, with 7+ yrs experience. Any of you have any experience or know someone who’s been in a similar position?

Hi. I can only speak for the company I work at (full service digital agency). For us the skills, enthusiasm and cultural fit is more important than any degrees. Sure, they help to prove you have the necessary skills. But with 7+ years of experience under your belt the projects and companies you worked before are way more interesting than any formal education. And having experience in multiple fields (in your case CS and economy) is always welcome. Perfect for an interdisciplinary job like e.g. a project manager. I hope I didn’t misunderstand your question and this is useful to you.

The bar is high for working abroad since the company will have to deal with worker visa issues, and obtaining one of these without a diploma in the field is very hard (at least for the US, but it's probably not very different for other countries).

I’ve done some research. Apparently US is really the place where things can get a little complicated, but it appears to me that it’s a hit or miss situation. Thanks for all the answers, it definitely shed some light on the situation.

working remotely as a us citizen is feasable and in theory painless, but there is a dilbert mentality yet to be addressed in most places that value bodies over team dynamics, so your aperture narrows a lot when you expatriate but stay on the market.

This has nothing to do with dilbert mentality and everything to do with simple tax/financial regulations.

i may have understood the OP to be from the US without inspecting more closely. US expats telecommuting for US companies is all about the mindset.
