Are there any solid possible reason why one would want to start a new project with Java (aside from working on Android and worrying about people not very familiar with Kotlin)

Seems unlikely. The only reason I can come up with is if you have tooling that doesn’t work with Kotlin and which is more important than the improvements Kotlin provides.

I would say that people in this Slack are very actively trying not to find those reasons if they exist, so this is probably not the best place to ask

If the team is experienced in java and doesn't want to use Kotlin, that would be a valid reason in my eyes.
