Angular 1 was great but from what I've heard, it's degraded quite a bit since then, especially since the switch to TypeScript

Afaik, it was more because people were tired of waiting for angular 2 where you also had to rewrite your app 😛
Angular 5 isn't bad now though...Typescript and code completion are good things 😁
