Curious what folks here have to say about this https://www.techyourchance.com/kotlin-vs-java-whole-story/
t
lost me at
please read this “text”:
by starting with that mess as an argument to a point I can only respond with go write some kotlin and form an opinion. be it a unit test, a library or hell even an extreme case of
lets get to know kotlin
which is the kobalt build system. the language and tools stand alone.
s
the author tries to make an “objective” comparison predicated on flawed arguments and arbitrary magic numbers, and then responds to people pointing this out by telling them they’re attempting to make a “subjective comparison” between Java and Kotlin
all in all, not worth your time imo
c
Yeah, for some reason, OP seems to think that answering to criticism with "It's your subjective opinion" makes him right and the other person wrong
s
I agree with what Shawn said. The article lacks any real deep research and is purely based on the authors opinion. The lack of any example code or comparison code makes me skeptical that the author has actually tried Kotlin.
s
The author is very clear he hasn't tried Kotlin (and in one comment he says he hopes he can continue to avoid doing so!). The TL;DR: seems to be: if your team switches to a different language, your first project after the switch will probably take longer. Which seems... well, duh! It's a hugely verbose article that really says almost nothing (hey, a bit like Java really!).

ignore it and move it on

TL;DR He uses metrics that are not really valid now, and maybe they never were https://www.quora.com/Are-software-estimation-approaches-such-as-COCOMO-still-valid-for-Agile-methodologies

Ah, we talked about that blog post already a few weeks ago ^^ He talked about "subjective opinions" by the kotlin guys, but then he uses some personal assumptions e.g. "10% productivity increase"
d
again, this post comes around every few weeks, indeed last week we discused on #C0BJ0GTE2
He's very vocal on twitter against Kotlin. He isn't an objective person
s
@dh44t Ah, sorry, missed the discussion on #C0BJ0GTE2 ... I don't understand why people get so "anti" about a language they haven't even used ... 😐
c
Emotional and professional commitments are volatile concepts when they get mixed
a
@Sean Corfield people get very emotionally attached & invested in to their language of choice. Very disappointing that the author seems v quick to hate without investing any time to actually learn Kotlin. It could be that he feels threatened.
