I remember reading emoji support in intellij some time ago. Is it something I need to configure correctly to make it to work?

As far as I can see, emoji supported by default. You can use it in strings, even as variable name and so on. It doesn’t have issues with skin color like in some other editors some times)

But you can see on my screenshot, that it's not working

On the screenshot I see that emoji was properly recognised and rendered with editor’s font. It even applied the green color of string.

Maybe it’s not clear enough for me, what did you expect?

The font defines how the emoji looks. Your monospace font simply let's them look different.
