Hi all 👋 I want to translate and make a contribution to Kotlin docs in my native language, can you please tell me where should I get started?
l
Hello, it's unlikely the official docs will ever have official translations because it'd require people working to update these on every single change or addition, making their maintenance significantly harder. So, you most likely want to make your own blog or website to introduce whatever you think is the most important to folks in your native language.
m
Yeah but I see other community members contributing to the translation of the docs the same way I want to
l
You can make an open source website that welcomes contributions.
Personally, I believe all technical docs should be in English whenever possible, and introductory content should also be translated. That way, people have a way to get started while they are still learning how to read English (and write and speak?), and as they get more experience in the topic and in English, they don't end up fragmenting the community further, so anyone can talk and collaborate with anyone beyond the beginner level.
BTW, my native language isn't English, it's French (we are known to not be great at foreign languages, especially English). When I was 15 years old (so 10 years ago), I was very bad at English, but I embraced the language as I was digging into technology and software dev, and just 3 years later, I was very comfortable reading anything in English, and nowadays, I'm also very comfortable speaking English. Practice makes perfect 🙂

I didn't say that I have problems with English and It's not my native language either... I know it pretty well IMO. English was my 3rd language and French is my 4th one 🙂

I never meant you have problems with English, I know you're not doing the doc for yourself since you'd need to understand English to do it in the first place.
BTW, what are the 2 other languages, and which one do you want to write content for? @Michael Grigoryan
m
Ah alright. My native language is Armenian, that's what I want to translate the docs to and the 2nd one is Russian
