Can I upgrade from IntelliJ 2018.3.6 to 2019.1 without reinstalling? Can Check Updates do this for me somehow?

Yes, it should work

Mm, I don't think so. Usually, you'll see either "Update and restart" or "Download". Second means reinstall and I believe that's the case with 2018 -> 2019.

It works for me with Toolbox, but it's a bit different way to update, but also I don't see big difference, app plugins and settings are migrated

I also recommend the Jetbrains Toolbox. It is very handy and handles all the update stuff automatically 🙂
