Interestingly enough, the original etymology of log (as in a record of events) came from ships, when they wanted to measure the speed and make a record of it. They would throw a log (piece of wood) overboard tied on to a rope with regularly spaced knots in it, and count how many knots in the rope were pulled out over a fixed amount of time. This gave their speed (in knots), and they would record it in the “log”-book. Over time this usage of “log” became common for recording many other types of data. So using wood-related puns for logging (of records) is actually bringing us full-circle back to the original meaning.
