It's about taking advantage of the new features in production code. This is exciting and goes further than just bumping a version number and calling it a day.

maybe i'm old fashioned, but a migration is when someone breaks backwards compatibility and you have make code changes to make your app run again

Oh, Kotlin never breaks compatibility from one version to another. Deprecation cycles span on at least 2 versions, unless it was an experimental feature. No breaking changes from 1.2 to 1.3
