i remember learning about maps being called "dictionaries", but i've only ever heard them referred to as maps since

I think Python or Ruby still call them dictionaries. 'map' comes from FP and as another said, I prefer that a given concept use the same name across languages. It's hard the first few times but then you get the definition in your head and it eases learning a new language.
