Java 8 end of life is near, end of public updates in a couple years and for commercial users in a half year, so Java 8 is not a threat for anyone.

Java 9 has barely any new ground breaking features compared to 8. The exciting stuff comes in 11. Java 9 is barely used

Right, I meant that "java 9 is EOL so no competitor" is a moot statement.

Sure, I just mean that it’s wrong to compare Java 8 vs Kotlin as strategic choice, because Java 8 is very strong but already legacy with new Java release cycle
Btw Java 9 already dead (no updates from March) and Java 10 will be supported one more month.
