Blame the company with the dumbest pricing scheme in history - Slack.
c
It ain't dumb if it works for them 🙂 They provide a product on their terms, those who do not want it are welcome to competition. I too do not like the terms, but I don't like competition even more, so I'm quite grateful that they give at least something for free for us to use. To each their own though.

It's just weird that there's no "open source" option with a fixed price. I don't know of any open community willing to pay 8$ a month per person to log into their Slack. At the same time, Slack isn't the best option for this kind of thing
p
I disagree. I think the fact that they have customers does not mean that the pricing scheme is not dumb.

back to IRC? lol

IRC isn't the only option. Discord is popular, successful, free, and as friendly to use as Slack
and it has a dark theme, which makes it inherently superior to Slack
c
Does it support code snippets? I do use Discord every day but only as a gaming voice chat.
f
It doesn't have threads though AFAIK
c
Yup, without snippets and threads it's unusable for dev community imho. If enough people ask for those they'll develop it, I'm sure, their team is pretty responsive for a project like that.
k
yes, it supports code snippets. Not sure about threads. But dev communities are very mixed about threads anyway
c
well, I don't like the way they were implemented here, but when discussion bursts out without threads chaos ensues, I've seen it happening with the new members of this slack a lot.
