poohbar: czech language will always have a special place in my heart
p
Great! 🙂
k
I had to write a sort function for my app once and a czech user informed me that in the czech alphabete, there is a letter consisting of two letters
how awesome is that? 😄
t
yep. 'ch' is hell 🙂
p
yeah
ch
.. but it's printed as two letters..
you are right that I would expected alphabetic sorting to go
e f g h ch i j
😄
c
k
you know those scroll bars that display the first letter of the category you're scrolling to?
Turns out one letter is not enough
tom scott would have field day with this 😄
m
cz
ch
rz
sz
dz
are also in Polish, but I would not expect e.g.
ch
close to
h
even tho they sound the same. 😕
p
Maciej, are the two-letter sounds you listed understood as a letter of their of their own? When you are reciting your alphabet?
m
Nope. These are just taught in primary school as mono-sound digraphs.
p
i see.. well
ch
in czech is an actual letter.. so thats why we would expect it to appear at its own spot in sorted string
m
Does Java string sorting handle it well for your
Locale
? 🙂
k
m
I know. First thing you learn when you want to write app in Polish.
