Yesterday, before Google announcement, kotlin had 8060 stars on github and scala 8200. Today kotlin has more than 9200 đŸ˜± I know that doesn’t represent a lot but still. It will be easier for all of us to say : “kotlin is the most appreciaded language of the JVM”. And the number of LOC should keep its rapid pace.

gaetan: It’s not wise to compare the stars between Kotlin and Scala now. You should compare Kotlin and Swift now which makes more sense. Swift has 38407 stars now and hope Kotlin could catch up with it.

@tianhao I don't necessarily agree. This shows Kotlin, at least by this metric, has overtaken Scala, which has had a lot of time to grow. It is clear Kotlin may be in the "Big 3" of next gen languages, which my guess will be: Kotlin, Swift, and Go.
I dont think Kotlin is seeking to take on Swift right now, at least not at the moment. In some ways they are helping legitimize each other now.

Metric by the number of stars to say big language is also not quite wise. Also I can’t understand what do you mean “next gen”? A bit of subjective 🙂
t
@tianhao indeed it all is a bit subjective
Hence why i called out the metric
By next gen, I guess I'm referring to what replaces C#, Java, Python, and other major "legacy" or incumbent platforms right now
