is there a way to make a TestApplicationCall without going through all the tediousness of making a test server, test engine, test request, etc

that's a very good request and IMHO a valid use case 👍🏻
i sometimes also struggle with corner case which seem also not to have been covered (yet). this was one i also encountered (doing test first).
