are there any resources on how the synthetic properties in the Kotlin Android extensions are created? These seem really powerful and it'd be cool to explore more applications of them, but I'm not really sure how they're generated off XML layouts

The synthetic properties are unrelated to Anko, though. They're part of the Kotlin Android extensions, which are a Gradle plugin, not a runtime dependency.
