What is the best way to read from files without going through Java.io.File?

Have a look at the static methods on java.nio.file.Files https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/11/docs/api/java.base/java/nio/file/Files.html#readAllBytes(java.nio.file.Path)

There are also some extension methods available for java.nio.file.Path introduced in Kotlin 1.4.20
