i can't really compare. i've never coded on a mac before. i do on some linux builds from time to time, but nothing specialized. i imagine there's a lot to be said for why so many programmers prefer to do it on macs

Trust me, it is not justified that they do. 😛

Such a terrible OS 😄
Trying to use it without constantly reaching for the mouse is a nightmare.

i don't know when i came back around to microsoft, but i don't have nearly the ill will toward them i used to, and I actually like my windows machine a lot.

careful bud, you’re gonna cut yourself on all that edge 😛

linux is nice, but there's so much maintenance. sometimes i just want my operating system to work for me and not me for it :S

100% with you Casey. Same for me.

I think what it really boils down to for me is that macOS gives me a generally better UX than Windows for developer things and a better UX than Linux for non-developer things.

My Windows machine just works.

yeah i mean, it's unix based os so you're gonna have an advantage coding in a lot of languages

You are kidding me right? 😄 The keyboard shortcuts for window management in Windows are unmatched
h

06/12/2018, 8:15 PM
but if you're doing stuff like python or java or web development, that unix base doesn't account for much that i can see?

Well, if you are doing things properly, you will do stuff in a vagrant box anyways. So it does not matter for shit what your host OS is.

haha, i love being able to open new desktops with windows tab

Window management keyboard shortcuts are only part of the experience lol, overall macOS doesn’t get in my way, especially when it comes to terminal things

i also really like powershell 😛
i feel like macOS would offer me the same things i largely appreciate about windows

Terminal emulators... 🤷
i also really like powershell
Go away 😛

which is just that i don't wanna have to deal with drivers and operating systems updates, and whether or not i installed the right file explorer and all that

there really isn’t anything like iTerm 2 or even the standard Terminal.app for Windows
ConEmu is the closest you can get, and it’s still not, like, TERM-compliant really
it’s also cmd/ps by default, and I’m far less likely to find instructions for those shells than I am for bash

This is just a discussion that cannot be settled 🙂

I could install WSL and set ConEmu to use that as the default shell, but at that point I am literally installing another operating system to run along with my main one

one thing i really enjoy about coding is that finding a new library or module or node is like opening a fucking christmas to me 😄 well, if a non-trivial portion of the christmas presents had hidden aids in them, but you get my point
personally i prefer to code on a smartfridge's minimal android implementation. that's where it's at. the controls are so intuitive!
