Thanks Andreas. In retrospective is was a bit of a http://lmgtfy.com/ kind of question. I am used to Gradle/Maven based project where the IDE files might be excluded but for purely IntelliJ projects (and this EduTools kind of projects in particular) I have no experience at all.
