While I agree over the exaggerated importance of HKT in general, I'd caution against the argument "I've never needed them" since there is strong selection bias at work.

I am not convinced that they are more trouble than they're worth, and by that I mean I haven't formed an opinion. If I can have them "for free" in a language (doesn't make the compilation slower or negatively impact the eco system and doesn't take too heavy a toll on the syntax), I'd be happy to have them
