edvin: It's nice to see anybody else using a 5 row keyboard for programming
e
@bamdmux Yeah, I learned from Carlw. Have never looked back. It's actually both faster and less training on my arms and shoulders. I love having CapsLock as Fn and using IJKL for arrows etc. What keyboard are you using?
b
I have a poker 2 at home and a chinese with gaterons at work
e
@bamdmux How are the gaterons? I've tried almost all cherry switches, but I'm interested to try gaterons and topre as well.
b
The gaterons I've tried, browns are a little bit softer than the cherry browns, but its almost indistinguishable
For a secondary keyboard, its a great value
e
My three favorite switches are Cherry MX Blue, Cherry MX Brown and Cherry MX Silent Red (pink). I can't decide on one favorite though.
b
The one i have cost me like 60 euros on amazon
e
Wow, that's cheap.
b
Mine are brown, blue and black in that order. Never tried the pinks
c
I have an acrylic plate coming today and am converting my macro keypad from Blue Cherry MX to Gateron Blacks
e
Pinks are perfect for screencasts or quiet environments. They dampen both the bottoming out and the return sound. I hear the Topre Quiet Pro is about the same, but with tactile bump as well. Kind of like a Cherry MX Silent Brown (hoping this will come along as well).
c
i'm also going to throw together a Cherry MX White keypad with (i made 4 plates out of the minimum order)
b
Magicforce 68 keyboard, they have several options of switches (gateron, cherry, outemu...)
e
I've seen that one.
@carlw How are the White switches?
c
how's the case on the magicforce? @bamdmux
e
brb
b
Pretty good for the price, the build quality impressed me
c
@edvin the whites are clicky, a little firmer than the blues
e
@carlw I think the blues are firm enough 🙂
c
you never know! some might say 1 keyboard is enough too
e
Some would be wrong 😎
But 7.. 7 is a good number.
k
Kinesis Advantage FTW 😎
e
@kevinherron Have you used such a beast before? It looks intriguing.
k
I’ve been using them for a couple years now
e
@kevinherron Are they mechanical?
k
yes
e
Have you tried the Ergodox?
k
I have the original Advantage at work and the Advantage2 at home
no, I haven’t
I think someone in the office has one though
e
Looks like almost the same layout, but two separate parts.
It looks like it's going to be awkward to hit the buttons, but I guess it's not.
It's this one, right?

https://www.kinesis-ergo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/kb600-angled-cc-510x344.jpg

Pretty sure you have to reach a little for those F-buttons. That's the beauty of the 60% keyboard - everything is within reach.
k
yeah, there’s a small reach for them
mostly for F7-F10
or maybe just F8 and F9 depending on the size of your hand
e
I hit CapsLock+0 for F10 for example. Within reach 🙂
k
it’s really comfortable. the ergodox probably is too, but i really like having my palms rest on this
comes with 2 little pads you can stick on where the palms go
e
Cool. Watching some video of it now.
The layout looks pretty traditional, just segregated into two parts. So no real learning curve on it?
k
there’s… some learning curve. some keys are moved around
enter, back space, delete, ctrl, alt meta
all shifted to the thumbs instead of pinkies
e
@kevinherron But you're using QWERTY, not DVORAK, right?
k
i am using qwerty yes
i could type on it immediately, and in 2 weeks I was back to 90-100+ wpm on typeracer
my co-worker who introduced me to the keyboard uses dvorak on it
e
Cool.
k
i was using an 87-key CODE keyboard before. I liked it, but my shoulders are somewhat wide and i was getting wrist pain because to type on a normal keyboard my wrists are arms come together all weird.
long ago I used a split microsoft ergonomic keyboard. loved it, always wished there was a mechanical version
e
I've watched (too many) keyboard videos lately and heard many complaining about that.
k
the downside to the kinesis advantage is it costs a damn fortune
best to get your employer to pay for it before you commit
😄
e
How much?
k
$320 I think?
yeah it’s 320 right now on amazon. looks like it was 350 before
crazy expensive
e
I paid almost $200 for each of my POK3Rs because of shipping to Norway.. And I have 7 😁 I could swap in a couple for one of these.
It's $349 on their web page right now.
k
i’m seeing 320 on amazon, some kind of sale maybe?
e
Options of different switches or is it just one kind? Custom?
k
they only have 2 options
i have cherry mx red, linear feel
they have a non-linear feel version also
e
OK.
What's the foot pedal for?
k
macro insanity
you can use it as ctrl, whatever
i don’t use it
e
Haha.. OK
k
or even own one
e
OK, gotta watch some more video on this thing.
k
my co-worker had one at one point, not sure he uses it any more
he’s used this keyboard for 9 years i think?
e
Wow.
k
he bought the 2 when it came out earlier this year or last year, whenever it was. his original one was looking nasty but still worked
e
Mechanical keys are forever.
k
yeah, speaking of…
the biggest difference between 1 and 2 is they use mech keys for the F keys in the 2
they didn’t in the 1, and his were all kinda crappy and needed to be pressed a bunch sometimes
e
Yeah, they looked a bit flimsy.
k
so i guess i need to amend my “still worked”
mostly worked. the rubber F keys were junk
e
It comes defalt as DVORAK according to a hilarious guy in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pad7bYb0zg0&list=LLVQjhQ5hsRM-Bk22kC0OTWw&index=305

k
you might be able to order it dvorak, but mine came qwerty
ah, “QD” model
n
@edvin As soon as I get my tax money back I will buy my self an ergodox ez, by the way you can get palm rests for the ergodox as well
e
@nimakro If you like it and get our speed up with it, I will order one as well to try. I'm pretty sure I'm a POK3R guy, but I'm curious about ergonomic keyboards.
n
@edvin I will let you know as soon as I have it 😉

c
@edvin how about some reviews on your channel? maybe some switch sound tests across the same model? i think a lot of reviewers are getting free gear so it would be nice to see an unbiased set of reviews
👍 2
e
@carlw I would like to do that 🙂
