ola! sorry for my lack of Portugues, but this is relevant to Kotlin people in Brasil. My company might be picking up a new client that has us doing a large scale development project that would require growing the team significantly, and here in Uruguay I don't think we will find people fast enough. And likely I will be in Brasil for most of the rest of the year so we could build a new team there. So my questions: What are good areas to place an office? How flexible are Brasileros for moving to other cities within Brasil? Or alternatively to Uruguay? Should we be looking at the big cities, or the nicest/funnest or beach cities? How prevalent is English (or Spanish) within developers in Brasil? and of course later when this is a real thing I'll post back about job openings if all continues as-is. Thanks for anyone that wants to help fill me in!

apatrida: Hi Jayson. Where to put a office will depend in what you need. If you pretend to develop a customer base here in Brazil, Sao Paulo is a must have, but if you want to just create a office to deliver, the capitals are probably your best choice. People here at Brazil usually move if the cities are in the same region.

Thanks, is more about development center and less about customers (we do have investors from Brasil and possible customers but we do SaaS so our location vs. their location isn't important)
No one wants a Fortaleza, Natal/Pipa, Floripa or Governador Celso Ramos office?

I am currently looking for jobs at Floripa 🙂

I'm not an expert on this things, but you should consider Curitiba as good place to start your office. In regards of life costs and taxas, I heard that Curitiba is one of the best choices.
But if the primary choice is driven by easyness to find developers, São Paulo is the wisiest choice.

Or Campinas.

I like Curitiba, and already know SP exists but not sure I can do the mega city thing.
Campinas i haven't yet visited, but likely can on next trip to SP

I would suggest Campina Grande - PB. 1) The weather is nice all year long (26C ~ 16C) 2) Is a mid-size city where you will not find problems like traffic jam or expensive rents. 3) It has one of best Universities of Computer Science in Brasil (UFCG). Really easy to find good engineers. 4) Two nearby International Airports (REC - JPA)

@apatrida the thing with Campinas is that is easy to recruiter graduates from Unicamp, there are a considerable number of IT companies there and it is an alternative for people trying to scape the metropolis of São Paulo. I am not sure if for similar reasons Belo Horizonte could be considered as well. They have UFMG and the main Google office there. But yeah, São Paulo will have the largest concentration of developers (good and bad ones)

@fsousasilva can you give me a safety rating on Campina Grande? I know Recife is sometimes problematic, but I know nothing about Campina Grande.
@aoriani thanks for the addition info. I have on my list: Cities: - Curitiba (easy reach of Uruguay by car, thinks flights are 1 connection) - Campinas (easy reach of Uruguay by flilghts, its own airport and direct) - Belo Horizonte - Campina Grande Beaches: - Floripa / Celso Ramos (easy reach from Uruguay, car, bus, flight) - Somewhere within reach of Campina Grande (Natal / Pipa)? the beaches assume that some rogue element of programmers would ignore other offers to be in a nice spot. The "easy reach from Uruguay" is not very important, just noting it.
I probably would need to include SP itself, in case there is an opportunity to piggy back offices there with a partner of ours, or investor company. But then again, life style is more important. And then anyone we really want anywhere in the world, we allow remote.

As the new project gets formalized, I'll swing by and take a tour of the cities I do not yet know.

I appreciate the feedback, thanks a lot!

@apatrida I lived in Campina Grande for 5 years and never had any problems. Like any city in brazil it does have problems but nothing compared to Recife, São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Campina Grande is 1h by car from João Pessoa (nearest beach) and 2.5h from Natal.

cool

@apatrida I would suggest São Paulo but it's kinda biased because I currently live here 🙂 but there's a lot of good Kotlin developers around Brazil, but if you want nice cities with beaches or something I would suggest Rio, Recife, Florianópolis, etc. 🙂
