I consider this option, the problem which I can see that
gradle
is folder of Gradle internals. I am not sure that this folder is used to contain metadata files of custom plugins. Do you know such examples?

A lot of people use this folder for custom build scripts.

Yes, it is right, but it is user’s choice. Not gradle plugin’s one. So some users could not use
gradle
folder to store some information beside generated by Gradle. I consider also making folder with dot in the start

There are a lot of directories already. I think it makes sense because lock file is related to build and should be (probably) preserved between builds
