Is it not possible to read from a @Model var outside a @Composable?

It is possible. At the moment either you must read/write on the main thread or use some of the tools in Frames.kt to set things up to manipulate @Model objects on other threads but we plan to make this much easier

the FrameManager gets set up after you call setContent with your composable for the first time
