Hi pals. I'm the organizer of the Torino Kug. I'm going to organize the first event. How do you distribute a free license during an online event? (Quiz, Random...other)?
g
Online is somehow harder, but usually you give them away during Q&A to the first X questions.

I usually do a classic raffle. Quick Google Forms or similar, getting a name and the email address. Having something like a Q&A or ask for contributions to a particular project can work well, but is highly dependent on the peopz attending

@Massimiliano Bertinetti ☝️ Holger is an expert of KUG online events. You should definitely check out the vKUG youtube Channel 🙂

@Holger Steinhauer [Mod] so you do the ruffle “in realt time” or you verify partecipants / email before?
h
@Massimiliano Bertinetti yeah, real-time-ish. I try to mimic the in-person raffle by sharing the link to the form say roughly 10min in the talk and then 2 or 3 times more. Then, I leave roughly 20 to 40 min time after the talk ends (in case someone grabs another beer after coming back from the toilet and wants to take part but didn’t wanna leave the stream)
I promise on the form and in the announcement, that I do not use that data for anything else than the raffle.

One thing I learned was: Ask people for their Twitter and maybe LinkedIn handles. This way you can announce it on e.g. Twitter with tagging them and getting a nice little engagement-hack out of it as well

All that said, this isn’t perfect yet. It still doesn’t quite feel like a real meetup raffle. I loved the idea @gammax had for one the FOSDEM giveaway livenses. The “we give one away to the first PR to Kotlin”. But not sure if this ever got out? (Nicola, that would be a nice update 😛 )
g
So last year, we gave away 3 licenses with the “open a PR” approach. It worked. This year as we were online: it did not 😞

In the end, all we try is to give people who actually attend the chance to win and avoid slackers just signing up to get the link and spam the form
If you go with the form approach and if you use Google Forms, gimme a shout and I can give you the magic formular to get a random winner 😉

@gammax Yeah, thought so. A shame, really. That approach is really awesome. For a meetup this could translate to “if you make a PR to the framework I am presenting to you today, you will get the license” and then tell the people during the session some kind of keyword they should use to approach you with the link to the PR or so

But honestly, for a meetup session, try the form first 😉
And I am very open for more ideas.

I thanK you @Holger Steinhauer [Mod] and @gammax for sharing your thoughts.
h
More than happy to help. Give me a shout if you need more help.
m
Sure thanks!
I was thinking at something fancy https://wheelofnames.com/
g
Yup I did thinks like that at the GDG as well
m
Asking to enter the raffle at the start, middle and end of the event (so if someone is present at all three moment has major opportunity to win) With names directly taken from the youtube chat
They then communicate the name -> email correspondence writing at my email. Next day I communicate the winner showing the video of wheel
(Too much?) 😂

Oh yes, didn't know that thingy so far. Try it! And tell us how it went
m
I think about, I have some times before the meeting
h
Sending out the email next day is absolutely fine. I did it at the same night but this is because I somehow call that life 🤣

No guys: this is the final solution! https://commentpicker.com/youtube.php Let you extract the comment from the video streaming url and apply some filter, then select a random one! Fast, simple, integrated and you can use it just after the finish of the event!
h
Good idea. Only question: How do you get the email address / contact details?
m
User must be logged in for write in the chat probably…?
I think you can also restrict the chat to members only
h
Well, it's just random YouTube users. I don't know how to get their contact details 🤔
