Hi Everyone! I’m one of the organisers of the Kotlin London User Group. During the pandemic we started having online events each month on our YouTube channel. We’d like to keep in contact with any other organiser who is interested in sharing their ideas.  Like many of you, we use Meetup as primary platform for our events, but we see very little value in it, especially since its cost (more than 200$ per year). We’d like to move away from it without loosing our members (almost 1500 as today). Are you also thinking of leaving Meetup? Do you use another platform do you recommend? Can we “unionize” and maybe cut a better deal? :D  Let us know!

Good question. Not sure if there are good alternatives

This seems unnecessary. I don't say this because I work for Meetup. I say this because I'm a Kotlin group organizer and Google will pay for your Meetup pro membership.
I'd sign up for the Community Leads platform at Google and see if they're still offering the deal our kug got.

Thanks Colin, I'll look into it!

As far as I know Google only covers expenses for GDGs, not for KUGs

Looking back, it appears the Google Community Leads platform covered Meetup Pro fees for my KUG among others as a one year program. It's possible that this is a temporary program for new Community Leads groups which may be no longer available. "As a benefit to the Leads Platform members (current ones or those who sign up before Feb 27), we're currently offering a 1-year free Meetup.com membership via a Google-sponsored Pro network. We determined that your community is doing great events in our region and would like to extend this offer to you today."

I’m also aware that they don’t want to keep providing meetup.com for their groups but instead move to Bevy

Might be a nice project for all of us 😉

Not yet but happy to give it a go. Our main concern is that we have 1500 members on Meetup and we don't want to lose them.

I'm told that Meetup is working on some kind of deal to keep KUGs and Google Groups on the platform. But I don't have any details yet. If cost is the problem, they'd probably work something out with you regardless. If cost isn't the problem, I'd love to hear about it simply to improve the product.
