Is it possible to run IDEA community version on the same codebase that I'm using AS on? I'm assuming the huge problems that have just surfaced for me in AS are due to Google not Intellij and it would be good to test that.

Maybe the latest AGP version doesn't work in IntelliJ, but you can downgrade it and it should work

yeah this is possible, I am currently running my project in Intellij Community Version to try the integration between Jetbrains Space and Code With Me. And I can say that using Intellij Comminity Version with Jetbrains ecosystem is the best for me instead of using Android Studio.
