Must confess I was unaware of this 4.x.0 AGP version - is that what we're 'supposed' to be using for CfD!? Maybe that's partly where I've been going wrong.

CfD doesn’t use AGP

You only need to use AGP 4 if you need to open your project in IDEA (IDEA doesn't support AGP 7 at the moment). If you use Android Studio, better to upgrade it to AGP 7
