Is this move by Google https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2021/05/Google-Docs-Canvas-Based-Rendering-Update.html inspired by or interesting for the direction of Compose-Web?

to improve performance and improve consistency in how content appears across different platforms
Looks like they just want to reuse shit via skia on the web as well as their mobile apps

The same argument would apply to Compose-Web as well. Just recently there was a discussion here about Canvas versus DOM. Maybe this points away from DOM which I am personally in favour of 😉.

I could definitely see the need for both, even in the same project: Canvas for web-app style stuff, dom for web-site style. I doubt we'd see that though (although maybe it's easier than I'd think), I think separate libraries is maybe possible if not super likely

Pessimistic interpretation: They want to break ad-blockers by moving from DOM to Canvas
