Where did my R.java go when having a sourceset android() ?

Hey, this is a bug with Android Gradle Plugin. Well not a bug, but something changed in the way it builds R in 3.3.0. This change goes in pair with an Android Studio update. This change has not yet happened in IDEA. You need to rollback to 3.2.1, then clean everything (.gradle, build folders, invalidate cache and restart) and your references to R should magically work again.
