is `kotlinx-coroutines-core:x.x.x-native-mt` still a thing are or does that not need to exist with the new native memory model

No idea what the 1.6.1 plans are but definitely plan for it not to be there in 1.7. It's a weird moment for libraries if you're trying to support both.

and looks like theres some activity in the repo referencing that issue too so i suspect a native-mt release is coming for 1.6.1
