I did, they are very low level and incosistent. In fact, python is probably the only language which has good high-level bindings for hdf5. We refused to use it because of that.

In this case it is not the Java world. HDF is bulky and rather obsolete. There are significantly better formats like parquet.
I agree about visualization, but Python is loosing it as well. All visualization is in JS nowadays and you can access it from java as easily as from python.
