It doesn't add a `File` , it adds a `Provider&lt;File&gt;` . That's an important distinction. `Providers` have <https://docs.gradle.org/current/userguide/lazy_configuration.html#lazy_properties|the ability to carry task dependencies> so the dependency will be ... well... carried :smile:

But it's very similar to SQLDelight as I contributed both
