Like, say, Java made garbage-collected runtime a mainstream. Not that it was not possible before, but it was first widely adopted runtime with GC, and it actually made a lot of things possible, that was not possible before (for mere mortals). Of course, you could do anything in assembly anyway, but that’s fine line I cannot define at 3am 🙂
