The parallel to math is a good one: clearly the strategy still in the schools all this time later is make them learn a bunch of techniques that are devoid of real world applicability, and then after 4 or 5 years of that, pull it all together with Calculus. Ironically, very few people make it to the end of the line so they end up with a patchwork of skills that they never got the bigger picture on. (Meanwhile an article came out last week that calculus is not even taught in something like 40% of HS in the US now…)
