Its funny you mention that. Scala is pretty established in the data science community as the JVM language for data science, mostly due to Apache Spark. And yet few data professionals accustomed to Python can learn it. I did pitch Kotlin as an alternative for Scala, but the Chief Data Science Officer at OReilly thinks it's too soon. I am going to wait until next year after Kotlin gains traction, and at the moment am doing a Reactive Python for Data class.
