I just rolled back HEIC support in https://github.com/Ashampoo/kim
Ashampoo Photos won't support HEIC I think.

IANAL, but it sounds like it's more about the image encoding itself.

Yeah, but wikipedia says "additional fees for commercial ISOBMFF licensees" - I'm not a ISOMBFF licensee. And Nokia grants the patents for non-commercial purposes. Ashampoo Photos as a closed source app can be considered a commercial purpose. đŸ¤”

My research is as far as ISOBMFF is over 20 years old and all patents should be expired by now.
That’s why JPEG XL can safely use it.
But there are HEIC specific ISOBMFF Boxes (for image rotation and so on) that may still have a patent until 2035. đŸ¤”
